Upgrading FileMaker Pro (macOS)

When the next major version of FileMaker Pro is available, you can use the updater to upgrade your existing installation. Because the updater upgrades your FileMaker Pro.app in place, you can optionally keep the previous version by copying it first.

To keep the previous version before upgrading:

If you want to keep the previous version so you can run two major versions side by side, make a copy of it before you upgrade.

  1. Quit FileMaker Pro.

  2. Copy the existing FileMaker Pro.app (usually in the Applications folder) to another location. Or make a copy in the same location with a different name—for example, adding the previous version number: FileMaker Pro 22.0.3.app.

You now have more than one copy of FileMaker Pro. When you upgrade using the downloaded updater, it asks you to choose which copy to upgrade. Select the FileMaker Pro.app in its original location (usually the Applications folder). The original is upgraded to the new version, and your copy keeps the previous version.

To upgrade FileMaker Pro:

  1. Do one of the following:

    • Check for Updates: In FileMaker Pro, choose Help > Check for Updates. If an update is available, the Software Update dialog opens.

    • Download Updater: Go to Updates and release notes, download the updater for the version you want to upgrade to, then start the updater.

  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the update.

To remove the previous version:

If you kept the previous version before upgrading, and later decide to remove it after confirming the new version works as expected, do the following:

  • Drag the copy of the previous version you kept (for example, FileMaker Pro 22.0.3.app) to the Trash.

Note  Don't remove the FileMaker Pro settings file mentioned in Uninstalling FileMaker Pro (macOS). All versions use settings in this file. You can remove the shared users folder only for the versions you no longer have installed.
